Football

Summer 2021

The Detroit City Lions Football Program develops male and female student athletes by introducing and reinforcing football fundamentals in preparation for high school football and beyond. Our certified football coaches and team management staffs are committed to the total well-being of all student athletes. Our team understand that early introduction to group sports builds confidence, encourages teamwork, encourages use of logic, and promotes physical fitness. Additionally, our athletes are required to maintain a GPA which meets the national standard for all student athletes. All athletes participate in small group team-building exercises designed to promote unity and celebrate diversity.

Cheer

Summer 2021

Detroit City Lions Cheer Program focuses on intermediate to advanced cheer techniques such as tumbling and stunts as well as participation in competitive cheer. DCL cheer leaders serve as crowd ambassadors and inspire enthusiasm, team spirit, and are encouraged to become peer mentors within their communities. All Detroit City Lions cheerleaders encompass the five main responsibilities of a cheerleader: Crowd Leader, Spirit Raiser, Ambassador, Athlete and Entertainer. Additionally, our athletes are required to maintain a GPA which meets the national standard for all student athletes. All cheerleaders participate in small group team-building exercises designed to promote unity and sisterhood.

Basketball

Spring 2021

Detroit City Lions Basketball is a competitive youth program for boys and girls ages 5 to 14. This year-round program will place continued emphasis on developing the five fundamental skills of basketball - dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. Our certified coaching staff has developed fine tuned programs by age level focusing on progressive development based on mastery of skills allowing players to build confidence, and foster the development of peer relationships, self-esteem, leadership qualities, and physical health. DCL is committed to helping shape a youth basketball environment that prioritizes the health and well-being of young athletes and promotes their enjoyment and development in the game.

Chess

Fall 2021

Detroit City Lions is pleased to offer the opportunity to introduce Chess to children ages 8 - 14. It is well documented that chess is a powerful tool for developing high order thinking skills, creativity, and memory. Your child will dive into the world of critical thinking where the ability to ahead becomes your child's most valuable asset. Chess can reduce stress and helps increase concentration in studies. Chess encourages focus, visualization, abstract thinking, decision making, and patience. Additionally, studies show that playing chess has a positive impact on numerical and verbal aptitudes, lowers incidents of suspension, and decreases behavioral problems. This program offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced competitive chess.

Volleyball

Summer 2021

The Youth Volleyball Development Program is designed to help girls ages 8-11 develop the fundamental skills necessary to advance their play and have fun while learning volleyball. Volleyball improves hand-eye coordination, builds agility, coordination, speed, and balance, builds muscular strength, improves interpersonal skills, boosts mood, and increases drive to succeed. Our Youth Volleyball coaches emphasize the proper mechanics and fundamentals through advanced techniques including serving, setting, spiking, passing and ball control so youth volleyball players excel on their all-around game and advance in the sport.

Summer Literacy Program

Summer 2021

The Detroit City Lions have teamed up with Book Nook and Michigan State University to offer our K-8 families FREE Virtual Literacy Tutoring this Summer! Taught by Michigan State University College of Education Immersion Fellows students will meet with their tutor in small groups on BookNook, an interactive app where students work to improve their reading skills with collaborative activities and fun games. A 6 week program beginning June 28, 2021 and running until August 5, 2021. Your child will get two 45 minute sessions each week, for 6 weeks (Mon/Wed or Tu/Th) Choose the days that works best for your family! Sign up now because space is limited!
